PTE Speaking: Answer Short Question and the Personal Introduction

Answer Short Question plays a brief audio question testing everyday or general-knowledge vocabulary -- something like asking what a particular category of object or person is called -- and expects a response of one word or a short phrase within a short response window. Unlike every other speaking task covered so far, elaboration is not the goal here: a single correct word answered promptly and clearly is a complete, strong response. Adding an unnecessary full sentence of explanation doesn't earn extra credit and risks running past the short window before you finish.

The practical strategy follows directly from that: listen carefully for the specific thing being asked, then answer immediately with the word or short phrase, without overthinking or padding it into a longer sentence. Hesitating for several seconds while deciding how to phrase a fuller answer is the most common way candidates lose time on this task unnecessarily.

The Personal Introduction, introduced in the first lesson of this course, is worth revisiting here alongside Answer Short Question because both are notably brief compared to Describe Image or Retell Lecture. Recall that the Personal Introduction is entirely unscored -- it exists as a microphone check and a low-stakes warm-up, and some institutions receiving your score report may optionally choose to listen to it. Even though it doesn't count toward any of your four communicative skill scores, it's still worth rehearsing a natural, roughly 20-25 second self-introduction -- covering your name, background, and purpose for taking the test -- both for your own confidence heading into the scored tasks, and because a fluent recording still reflects reasonably on you if an institution does listen to it.

Together, these two tasks are a useful reminder that PTE Academic doesn't reward length or elaboration uniformly across every task type -- reading each task's actual expectation correctly, whether that calls for one word or ninety seconds of structured explanation, is itself part of the skill being tested.
