Explanation
$scope is the object AngularJS uses to connect a controller's JavaScript data to its HTML template -- properties set on $scope inside a controller function become available for interpolation and directives in that controller's section of the page: $scope.name = "Ada"; makes {{name}} in the template display "Ada".
ng-model creates two-way binding on a form input: <input ng-model="name"> means typing in the input immediately updates $scope.name, and if $scope.name changes elsewhere in the code, the input's displayed value updates too -- data flows both directions automatically, with no explicit event handler needed on either side.
This is a genuinely distinctive AngularJS design choice worth contrasting with later frameworks (including modern Angular, from your other course if you've taken it): most later frameworks default to one-way data flow plus explicit events (data down, events up, as in Angular's @Input/@Output) rather than automatic two-way binding, partly because automatic two-way binding at scale made it harder to trace exactly what changed which value when in a large application -- one of the real, legitimate criticisms that shaped later framework design.
